The main reason for this note is to ask if there is any record (or literature relating to) why Charles Nash used the name Lafayette for his upmarket car when it was introduced (c 1920). I suspect he probably knew Henry Leland personally and noticed that Lafayette came just before Lincoln alphabetically!

You appear to know even less about Lafayette than I do! I have attached a brief history copied from the Standard Catalog of American Cars (1982 edition) by Beverly Rae Kimes.(Krause publications). I think Charles Nash was fairly clever but maybe this was a mistake but he made the best of it. The first Lafayette was the wrong car at the wrong time. The slump of 1920-1 killed a lot of luxury car makers. I dont know if there are many survivors of this make, I saw one in Harrahs when I was there in 1978 ( it was a sedan) and there was a comparison test between a Lafayette and a contemporary Cadillac in a US old car mag in the early 80s, but I can't remember which one.
